About the instructors

Dan learned to pack as a necessity with Special Operations in Afghanistan, assisted by his knot tying knowledge learned in Scouts. Once he retired from the military and returned home to Idaho, as an avid hunter and outdoorsman, he wanted to use his packing skills to enable to him to travel further into the wilderness.  Once Dan got involved with Squaw Butte Chapter of Backcountry Horsemen of Idaho, along with his wife Marja, he quickly became indispensable as their lead packer, delivering supplies for the wilderness trail crews. 

Marja grew up in the mountains of northern California and started working at a pack station in the Sierra Nevada mountains at age 17, spending five summers there learning to pack in the Emigrant Basin Wilderness Area.
